Well, guess what? I’ve answered an art challenge and here is the result. A new friend of ours suggested I answer a call for submissions for the Peggy’s Cove Area Festival of the Arts. Thirty wooden fish were made available to local artists to ‘do with as they wish’ to ultimately help raise funds for children’s art programs. Twenty more entries are available in other media, but in the same 9″ x 19″ size. Out of the 50 entries, a jury will choose 10 to be displayed at the Saltscapes Expo in Halifax from April 25th through 27th. The 10 chosen fish will then be put to a ballot for the People’s Choice Fish, which will then be purchased by the Peggy’s Cove Area Festival of the Arts and raffled off to raise funds. All for a good cause.
And I had a great time with my fish. What do you think? I hope my fish is one of the 10 chosen. Her name is ‘Harlequin Romance’. She is made of 3/4″ high quality MDF and painted in acrylics. How I arrived at this design? Well, this is where my years as a graphic designer come in. I knew that if the ‘winner’ was to be chosen by the public, and would be a raffle item, then something with bright colour and contrast, with a little bling might be the thing to attract their attention. Of course, I have no idea what other artists have done, so I may be way off track. But that’s half the fun, isn’t it? Wish me luck!
Part way through the process, I began taking photos – see the gallery below. The first photo is of the back side after it had been primed and before I began applying paint. The patchwork on the front side had already been painted at this point.
